WetlandCare Australia (WCA) is a national not-for-profit, non-government science-based organisation, with a mission to support the community in the protection and repair of Australia's wetlands. We do this through action-based partnerships with governments, landholders, natural resource managers, researchers and the community. Our focus is on onground community engagement in project delivery and the provision of technical expertise, education and local advice on best practice wetlands protection, biodiversity conservation, and management and rehabilitation.

WCA is a not-for-profit, registered charitable institution, with a volunteer Board of Directors, listed on the Register of Environmental Organisations, and all donations are tax-deductible.

| Sustainable floodplain management on the Bellinger and Nambucca floodplains continues The Bellinger and Nambucca Sustainable Floodplain Program is back on track after the prolonged wet season and severe floods of 2009 put a dampener on WetlandCare Australia’s progress in implementing the project. | Engaging the Ocean Shores Public School community in coastal wetland rehabilitation Ocean Shores Public School has a School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) which identifies the revival of the schools nature trail as a priority. WetlandCare Australia will be delivering a Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NRCMA) project during 2010 to coordinate and assist the school in realising this goal. (more details) |

| Micalo Monsters WetlandCare Australia has recently discovered around 80 monster Prickly Pear weeds at a site on Micalo Island near Yamba which they are in the process of eradicating with the help of Clarence Valley Council. (more details) |
| Australian Wetland Alliance The Australian Wetland Alliance (AWA) is a growing association of non-government organisations which was formed at the Brisbane Conference of the Parties in 1996, to provide a network system and representation for NGOs working in wetlands. | Best Management Practice guidelines published for wetlands on cane farms Canegrowers Australia in conjunction with BSES, have launched a series of Best Management Practice guidelines for sugar cane farmers, including ‘Riparian and Wetland areas on Cane Farms’ written by Bob Smith of WetlandCare Australia. | Community monitoring for the protection of Bribie Island wetlands In an effort to monitor Bribie Island wetlands for future protection, WetlandCare Australia is facilitating the “Bribie Island Wetland Protection and Monitoring” project for the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA). | East Chickiba Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) The Chickiba SEPP 14 wetland is located in East Ballina on the Far North Coast of NSW. WetlandCare Australia was commissioned by Ballina Shire Council in 2008 to carry out an Environmental Impact Study and prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to examine the state of Chickiba SEPP 14 wetlands and determine which measures can be employed to improve the function of the wetland. | Freshwater fish of the Burdekin Dry Tropics Burdekin Dry Tropics Natural Resource Management (BDTNRM), in collaboration with WetlandCare Australia, is currently producing a booklet with which to assist in the identification of the regions fascinating freshwater fish species. (more details) |
| Healthy Wetlands for Healthy Catchments in the Southern Rivers Region A new mapping project has begun in the Southern Rivers area of NSW which will build on WetlandCare Australia’s already extensive mapping database. This project is supported by the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority, through funding from the Australian Government's Caring for our Country. WetlandCare Australia will map, classify and prioritise wetlands found in the Southern Rivers catchment management area. (more details) |
| Knockrow Wetland Restoration Project With funding from the Federal Govenment Community Coastcare, the Knockrow Wetland Restoration project will restore and protect an area of important coastal wetland located in Northern NSW. This will include protecting an area of remnant vegetation, and revegetating over one hectare of adjoining wetland. (more details) |
| Northern Rivers Upper Tributaries Rehabilitation Project Under this project landowners in the Richmond catchment with high conservation value rainforest remnants and wetlands on their properties will be able to access technical and financial assistance to help them address issues such as weeds, stock management, erosion and lack of connectivity. | Paddy's River & Lake Bathurst and The Morass WetlandCare Australia has been working with the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority(HNCMA) to improve the condition of wetlands in the southern catchment. Management plans for the Paddy's River Wetlands & Lake Bathurst and the Morass have been completed and the project is now in the stage of implementing recommended on ground activities to improve and maintain the health of these nationally important wetlands. | Reef Rescue: Wetlands of the Burdekin Dry Tropics Region As part of the Australian Government initiative Reef Rescue, financial incentives are being provided to improve the health of wetlands draining from intensive agricultural land. Round 1 of the Reef Rescue Wetland program is focussed on coastal wetlands draining the intensive agricultural areas of the Burdekin-Bowen coastal plain. (more details) |
| Rehabilitating Burdekin's Billabongs and Bowling Green Bay Catchments Wetland works continue! WetlandCare Australia in partnership with North Queensland Dry Tropics and many other significant stakeholders in the Burdekin have been successful in securing funds for the regions wetlands through the Australian Government Open Grants round. | Restoration of Montane endangered ecological community (EEC) wetlands of the New England tablelands Montane wetlands are unique ecosystems that occur above 600m in altitude and are home to many rare plants and animals, they are also regarded as endangered ecological communities. The current round of the project involves the planning and implementation of restoration works for Montane EEC's on private properties within the NRCMA area (Port Macquarie - Qld Border - Great Dividing Range). | Restoring Jali Lands at Wardell New conservation works are currently being undertaken on over 30 hectares of bush land approximately 15km south west of Ballina, located in Bundjalung Country. The land is owned by the Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) and is representative of some of the most pristine and biodiverse ecosystems of the entire NSW coast. (more details) |

| Rocky Shorelines Protection and Education Project The Rocky Shores Protection and Education project aims to increase the level of protection of rocky shores in northern NSW by fostering community awareness and appreciation of the ecological significance of these ecosystems, the threats they face, and actions that can be taken to reduce these threats. | Streambank stabilisation works in the Limeburners Creek, Maria River and Wooli Wooli River WetlandCare Australia has received funding through the NSW Environmental Trust Restoration and Rehabilitation Program to undertake streambank stabilisation works in the Limeburners Creek, Maria River and Wooli Wooli River. The project is being undertaken in partnership with key stakeholders including Port Macquarie Hastings Council and affected landholders. (more details) |
| Sustainable floodplain management in the Nambucca and Bellinger catchments WetlandCare Australia, with funding through the Australian Government’s Caring for Our Country Landcare Program, is delivering a project to increase awareness and implementation of best practice floodplain management in the Nambucca and Bellinger catchments. | Wetland Conservation Partnerships in the Hunter-Central Rivers Region WetlandCare Australia, in conjunction with a number of other stakeholders, has recently completed a wetland enhancement project focused on reducing the impacts of invasive weeds and pest animals on the internationally significant Ramsar wetlands of the Hunter-Central Rivers region.
